All aboard the Tebow train

Tuesday, 29 November, 2011

The Denver Broncos have ridden quarterback Tim Tebow all the way to contention in the AFC West, and with a Week 13 matchup against the Minnesota Vikings, there’s no reason to believe that will end any time soon. Will it be enough to push the team into the playoffs for the first time since 2005?

Check out the latest odds on this matchup at Bodog.

With Tebow under center, the Broncos have emerged as the only true threat to the Oakland Raiders in the division, the only problem is that they’re running out of time to gain on them. Now just a single game back Denver will look to maximize every winnable opportunity they can get.

According to Bodog, the Broncos have just 40/1 odds of winning the Super Bowl, but their position on the NFL odds may continue to rise. Since taking over as the starter of the team, Tebow has led them to a 5-1 record.

With the recent news that the club had waived veteran quarterback Kyle Orton, the quarterback position opened up as Tebow’s for keeps. If his performance since accepting the role is any indication, there will be no looking back.

No. 3 Arkansas at No. 1 LSU

Tuesday, 22 November, 2011

For the first time in BCS history, the top three teams in the standings all hail from the same conference. In this case, from the same division, no less.

This Saturday two of those top three SEC West Division clubs will square off against each other when No. 3 Arkansas visits top-ranked LSU to close out the regular season.

The Tigers are listed as 12-point home favorites and the total is at 52 at Bodog.

Thanks to a seven-game win streak following their September loss to Alabama, the Razorbacks have emerged as a national contender on the NCAA football betting landscape. Their rise up the standings, coupled with LSU’s undefeated campaign, makes the upcoming Week 13 tilt one of the most anticipated of the season.

With a conference championship game bid still very much on the line for either squad – as well as a ticket to the BCS National Championship game in January – all eyes will be in Louisiana to see how the country’s toughest division shakes out.

Can Tyler Wilson continue to guide his Razorbacks in the air against a Tigers team that allows just 10.0 points per game? There’s a reason why LSU has held the No. 1 spot in the BCS Standings ever since they bounced No. 2 Alabama in a 9-6 overtime slugfest.

Breeders’ Cup Classic: Odds to win

Wednesday, 2 November, 2011

Now that the post positions for the $5M Breeders’ Cup Classic have been drawn, the strategizing begins.

What do these starting positions mean for the favorites and the longshots? Uncle Mo, the race’s first choice, will have to contend with outside post 12 – but his speed will serve him well going into the first turn.

Uncle Mo will also be looking to become the first horse in Breeders’ Cup history to win a Breeders’ Cup race the year after winning the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile.

Havre de Grace, who is attempting to become the second female horse to win the Breeders’ Cup Classic, will be contending with post 10. Not known as a particularly quick starter, Havre de Grace will depend on jockey Ramon Dominguez to steer clear of traffic troubles early on.

Expected pacesetter Game On Dude will break from post 8, which suits his frontrunning style. And breaking from extreme inside post 1 is longshot To Honor and Serve, whose odds of winning do not improve with that unlucky draw.

Here are the 2011 Breeders’ Cup Classic odds to win at Bodog Racebook as of Wednesday, Nov. 2, 11:15 a.m. PT:

AFC North Rumble: Ravens at Steelers

Tuesday, 1 November, 2011

The Pittsburgh Steelers will have an opportunity to shore up their half-game AFC North lead this Sunday, and with the Baltimore Ravens and Cincinnati Bengals hot on their heels heading into the second half of the NFL season, it’s essential that they come through.

As of Tuesday afternoon, the Steelers were listed as 3-point home favorites and the total was pegged at 41.5 Get all your NFL odds at Bodog.

With a 6-2 record through Week 8, the Steelers are slight favorites over their upcoming opponents. According to Bodog, Pittsburgh has 9/1 odds of winning the Super Bowl. This time out, they’ll host the 5-2 Ravens in the primetime Sunday night time slot.

With 11/1 odds on the NFL futures boards, the Ravens are a force too powerful to be ignored. Even more concerning for Pittsburgh, however, is that Baltimore has already beaten them considerably once this season.

Will the Week 9 matchup be a repeat of the Week 1 tilt that saw Baltimore walk away with a 35-7 victory? Questions of a looming power shift in the division have been abundant ever since.

Is the AFC North a big enough division to have both Baltimore and Pittsburgh contending for the Super Bowl (let alone Cincinnati still very much in the picture at 5-2)?

College Football: Clash of SEC titans

Tuesday, 1 November, 2011

The NCAA’s best will square off in a primetime match up on the college football betting board when the No. 2 Alabama Crimson Tide (8-0) host their SEC West rival, No. 1-ranked LSU (8-0). Will the Tigers be able to defend their top spot on the road?

As of Tuesday afternoon, the Crimson Tide were listed as 5-point home favorites and the total was pegged at 42. Get all your college football odds at Bodog.

Coming fresh off a victory over reigning BCS National Champion Auburn in Week 9, LSU will look to ride significant momentum into their date with ‘Bama. The Tigers have not only thwarted ranked Auburn this season, but also four others in the top 25, including then-No. 3 Oregon.

The Crimson Tide have been similarly tested and have walked away with little damage through the first two months of the season. That’s why they, along with LSU, sit among the elite of the elite on the NCAA futures board.

Heading into the head-to-head matchup, however, the obvious point of contention is that only one of the two clubs can remain undefeated. With the BCS ranking system in full effect, it may be a while before the loser of the tilt works their way back up and into the BCS National Championship game conversation.

Think you know how the clash of college football’s finest will unfold?

Breeders’ Cup: Top three contenders

Tuesday, 1 November, 2011

This year’s Breeders’ Cup Classic features a standout field. Havre de Grace is hoping to cap off a sensational season: She defeated male horses in the Woodward Stakes (G1) at Saratoga. On Oct. 1, she won her second grade 1 race: the Beldame Invitational Stakes at Belmont Park.

Another strong contender is Uncle Mo, who was pegged as a top contender for this year’s Kentucky Derby. But illness forced him onto the sidelines for nearly four months. In his latest outing, Uncle Mo showed he has truly returned to his pre-injury form with a powerful victory in the Kelso Handicap (G2) at Belmont Park Oct. 1. But can he handle the 1 ¼-mile distance of the Classic?

Flat Out also deserves a look after a breakout year. His first Grade 1 win came at Belmont Park in the Jockey Club Gold Cup Oct. 1. But he was defeated by Havre de Grace in the Woodward Stakes. Still, the Charles Dickey trainee has been working well at Churchill Downs.

No case in alleged YouWager dispute

Monday, 31 October, 2011

Over the weekend, a player at YouWager.eu (4 stars) contacted RTB claiming his account was suspended after he won $5,000 and requested a payout.

During a follow-up investigation, RateTheBooks.com communicated with representatives at YouWager.eu and learned that the player’s account never had a balance over $1,000. The account is still open and currently has a zero balance.

A previous account held by the same player had a balance of about $1,000 as of November 2010, but the balance was lost during wagering and the account was subsequently closed by the player.

It should be noted that YouWager was very cooperative during RTB’s investigation and openly shared information.

Buffalo favored north of the border

Wednesday, 26 October, 2011

Fresh off of a bye week in Week 7, the Buffalo Bills will head north of the border to host the Washington Redskins in the fourth year of their five-year series in Toronto. Early NFL odds point to the “hometown” Bills as the favorites heading into the match.

The Bills are listed as 6-point “home” favorites and the total is set at 46.

Dating as far back as 2008 the Bills have hosted (and lost) one game each season on Canadian soil – this year, with 40/1 odds of winning the Super Bowl and a 4-2 record, excitement has already started to build.

Will Buffalo take advantage of their recent bye and come out of the gates looking to punish a Washington defense that most recently fell to the Cam Newton-led Carolina Panthers?

With 75/1 odds on the NFL futures board the Redskins aren’t about to dominate football headlines, but their 3-1 start to the season is indicative of the damage they can do if Rex Grossman is at the top of his game. Unfortunately for Skins fans, back to back losses have bumped them down the standings in a tough NFC East division.

For Bills fans in Canada and beyond, Ryan Fitzpatrick and company will look to pick up where they left off before the break. Though Buffalo has lost two of their last three matches, the defeats came at the hands of respectable Cincinnati and the New York Giants – by a combined six points.

Is this the year that Buffalo reverses years of futility?
